A good start.

Breakfast in the Desert. Hot eggs and foul (pron. ‘fool’ - it’s brown beans). Over dinner last night we discussed the Willy’s problem and narrowed it down to the 80 octane petrol. That plus the dirt is the most likely cause of the poor running, so once we struggle through this tankful we shall move on to the 1000 litres in the Iveco truck. Over and out. Packing up camp! Picture is dawn over our camp.

  1. Interesting that everyone is well-jacketed for brekkers....presumably cold at night?

BTW, that top photo is fantastic!

  2. Like the windbreak. Not many of those for sale in Cleethorpes.

  3. To all followers of this trip - Toby has just rung me on his satellite telephone to say they have had a wonderful day, visited four LRDG sites and are approximately 50 km from the Sudanese border. The jeeps are going extremely well.

  4. Spectacular photography! Living in AZ, I know it gets cold in the desert at night. Glad you are making good progress and the jeep issue is resolved.

  6. Made my usual map-check on the expedition this morning....it must be interesting where they are as they've been going round and round in strange circles for two hours!

  7. Affer - I don't know what map-checking you are looking at but the team have been heading steadily north the last couple of days! All is going very well, apparently exceeding all expectations! They should be in Siwa and civilisation on 19th.

    1. I also see where they have been in the same area for a while too! BTW they passed by within about 5k's from a spot in the sand sea where I found a cache of intact WW2 British jerry cans (not flimsies) in February!

    2. Hi - just wondering when you last heard from Toby? Is the plan still 19th in Siwa? Few days since I've heard from Sam and was hoping might be back in phone reception tonight? Agree they seem to having great time. Had dinner with them before they left Cairo and so looking forward to it! Thanks, Lucy
